Ezetimibe the generic for Zetia is in a class of drugs called cholesterol-lowering medications. It works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood vessels (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Lowering blood levels of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina (chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.
Ezetimibe is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. It may be used alone or in combination with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin).

Uses of Ezetimibe
The primary use is to treat high cholesterol and related conditions.
HOW TO USE:
- Ezetimibe is to be taken by mouth with or without food
- If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible, if it is close to your next dosage skip it and proceed with your normal dosage schedule
- If you currently take a satain drug you can take Zetia at the same time
- If you are also taking colestipol, cholestyramine, or colesevelam, take Ezetimibe at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking the other medication
- All medications should be taken as prescribed by your doctor
